things I love

Well, we are counting down to our big trip to Oz, the long way there, but it’s still important to enjoy those little things day to day, week to week. We’ll look back and realise that we probably should have done and seen a whole lot more. So that’s why it’s important to keep one eye on the here and now and not wish any of these last weeks away. Here are some things I loved recently:

  • Looking a challenge in the face – 10 weeks until my half marathon in Kent – training plan downloaded. Undulating means flat doesn’t it?
  • Sunday Roast – the best thing about a cold summer is that it means that Sundays are still roast days.
  • Doing other things besides work at work – why not join the Dodgeball competition. Surprisingly fun.

  • Fifty Shades (see post to come) – don’t be surprised if your partner gets you this book for your birthday/anniversary/just because it’s Tuesday.
  • Catching up with the girls twice in one week. Priceless.
  • Dinner parties – mid week. And delegating all responsibility (someone has to drink the wine).
  • Amazing adventures – friends that embark on amazing one-year journeys across Europe and Africa. Awesome.

my favourite things this week

At seven pm tonight I was at work after a particularly stressful week in the office for our team. After missing my favourite Friday night yoga class, with a headache, and feeling a bit grumpy and angry at the world, I wasn’t in a good way to start any kind of Friday night fun. What I needed was to let it all go so I could start the weekend in a good frame of mind. I needed to be a bit positive about my week – there were lots of good things in there along with the tough work. Here they are:

  • A short week – yet again. I found out that our fellow Americans don’t get any extra time off over Easter so that made me extra appreciative.
  • Seeing All New People. Ok, I did only go because Zach Braff was in it (you know the funny guy from scrubs) but it was actually so clever. He wrote it too – that guy is talented.
  • My new shoes – I have only worn them once this week but just knowing that they are there, sitting in their box, fills me with joy.
  • Emails from my sister – I love getting emails from my sister (this week’s was about birthdays – hers – and clothes – the best kind). She has two little boys so emails only arrive in the middle of the night or during a rare moment that we call spare time.
  • Trying a new recipe. This week, I tried Jamie Oliver’s Moroccan Lamb Burgers. Twice! They took a little under seven minutes to prepare and will totally impress at summer BBQs. Just substitute the burger bun with pita bread.
  • Taylor St Baristas for the best coffee (Australian of course) and LAMINGTONS. For the non-Australians, they look funny I know but you just have to try them.
  • Pay day – today – I love feeling rich for a day.
  • Reading The Hunger Games. Best. Book. Ever.
Happy weekend everyone. Now for a glass of wine.

things I loved about this week

This week’s challenge: Write a list of things that you appreciate right now, in the present moment. Focus on each of them & let the love inside you well up. Even when things appear to be going really, really badly, there are always things to be happy about.

I loved this challenge this week. I really have felt more positive and you know what, happier, than I have for a long, long time. Actively thinking about what made me smile during the day rather than focusing on the negatives was like the sun coming out from behind the cloud. It helped that the sun actually did come out too – thanks sun!

If you think about it, focusing on the negatives is so easy to do. ‘The tube was a nightmare/overcrowded/delayed’, ‘oh no I can’t believe it’s Monday again – I’ve got too much/not enough/boring work to do’, ‘I’m not smart/pretty/happy enough’. I’m sure we are all culprits of this kind of thinking a lot of the time. Yes, me included. But now, whenever something negative pops into my mind, I’m really going to try to replace it with a something a bit more positive. Like birthday cake or the fact that spring is FINALLY here.

CHALLENGE HAPPINESS RATING: Freaking Fabulous

Next week’s challenge: Indulge in your “guilty pleasures”, whatever they are. (Old episodes of America’s Next Top Model, ginger ale, chocolate cake, romantic comedies, etc.)

things I love about Thursday

  • Building renovation mishaps that mean that you can’t possibly get back to your desk at work… for the whole afternoon.
  • Rock and roll work colleagues who continue their business meetings in the pub downstairs – you know who you are. The troupers.
  • Zumba after a tough day ‘in’ the office. I usually can’t stop laughing – mostly at my own moves. Who can shimmy anyway.
  • Reading my Stylist (best magazine ever and it’s free) and checking out Goop (Gwyneth Paltrow loves Cowshed and Soap and Glory too).
  • Starting the day by taking a bit of time to just sit, relax and meditate Headspace is such an easy way to get started and even for the non-airy-fairy folk out there – it’s just plain practical.
  • Ending the day by coming home to my boyfriend, Sam. Ah.

things I love about Tuesday

Things I love about Tuesday

  • Lunch in the Sun – thank you for coming back into my life. Please stay. But just in case you can’t I’m going to make the most of every single second that we have together.
  • Hanging out with some pretty awesome friends tonight – apparently going out on Tuesday night makes the week seem shorter and a lot more fun. See you later Tofu and Telly Tuesday’s – you are now being moved to Thursday.
  • Pretty Pink Nails at work. Brighter = Happier.
  • Porridge in the mornings – I can’t describe in words just how much I love porridge – especially with blueberries, raisins and pumpkin seeds. Breakfast rocks – it is completely my favourite meal of the day unless it’s……
  • Vietnamese Pho – noodles from heaven. See how to make them for yourself here.
  • Slowclub – at London Village Underground tonight. Quirky, fun and oh so sweet sounding – songs that make your heart happy.

things I love about Monday

This week’s challenge: Write a list of things that you appreciate right now, in the present moment. Focus on each of them & let the love inside you well up. Even when things appear to be going really, really badly, there are always things to be happy about.

I think we should all do this everyday. Thinking about the things that we appreciate will make us feel more positive. I’ve tried doing this in the morning and it really works. Here are some the things I love about today:

  • holidays and having random days off to chill out and relax. No one should ever go to work on Mondays.
  • spring and a bit of sunshine goes a long way to make you happy – just remember that sunscreen.
  • my boyfriend, Sam, who can make me feel better in an instant and looks very cute when he is sleeping.
  • being able to speak to and see my family even though they are on the opposite side of the work – technology you are the greatest.
  • having the opportunity to do so many things with my life – now I just have to decide.
  • flowers, colour and pretty party dresses – hello ASOS.
